How did the "ugly looking" crocs become a fashion symbol?
Updated: Apr 12
If you aren't living under a rock, you definitely know what Crocs are but have you ever wondered how the "ugly" looking crocs became such a fashion symbol. Celebrities like Priyanka Chopra , Ariana Grande , Justin Bieber and many influencers have been seen flaunting their crocs on numerous occasions.
Crocs are currently seen as a symbol of "embracing originality and personal comfort". But how did this product whom the investors thought was a "fad" turn into something so grand?
The company 'Crocs' was started 18 years ago in 2002 as a "comfort" shoe line ; it was made with a special kind of resin that made the shoe feel absolutely comfortable and some even claimed that they felt they weren't even wearing shoes. People who had jobs which required heavy movement started wearing crocs in the United States - people working in restaurants , factories and other such jobs found crocs the best footwear for the kind of work they had to do.
Meanwhile there were people who bashed them for their ugly looks.
At one point , investors refused to invest in them and called them a passing fad but the company knew how to recover through this. They expanded their shoe line to different kind of designs and their sales increased like anything in 2006.
In 2007 , President Bush wore crocs publicly and magazines claimed that Crocs were the one of the "10 Worst things" that could happen to men.
Once you switch to crocs there is no going back BUT would you abandon your daily sneakers and wear an ugly pair of crocs for comfort and "INDIVIDUALITY" ?
The choice is obviously yours.
Fun fact - The net income of the company was $10.24M in 2017!
I think Prince George likes his crocs, he looks really happy in them :)
