2 Years of Akarsh Khurana's "Karwaan" - A journey of three souls
Updated: Oct 10, 2021
“Main akela hi chala tha janib-e-manzil magar, log saath aate gaye aur karwaan banta gaya.”

As one reads the title "Karwaan" , he is able to guess that the movie would be about travelling, perhaps a road trip. Bollywood is fond of making road trip movies and interestingly most of them are able to capture an audience, we will talk about road trips some other day maybe.
"Karwaan" is a Persian word and literally means a group of deserted travelers. The title itself gives a subtle hint on the philosophy of the movie.

Directed by Akarsh Khurana , the movie is shot in the most beautiful way possible - it captures emotions and the beauty of South India in a way that connects the viewers to the characters and to the places they visit. The movie stars Irfan Khan , Dulquer Salman and Mithila Palkar who did a terrific job and interestingly, no character overshadowed the other which adds to the charm of the movie.
The stories of the three characters blend in the best way possible and through the stories of these characters , the film touches the problems of the modern world in a subtle way.
" 3 Lost Souls, 2 Dead Bodies , A Journey of a Lifetime"

The movie starts with Dulquer Salman's character Avinash - a mediocre IT employee with a 9 to 5 job and a somewhat detatched person; he receives the news of his father's death but doesn't shed a tear. As the story advances, we get to know the inner struggles of the character , his desire to go into a creative profession and how he was somewhat dragged in a job he didn't want to do.
At the end of the day , the inner conflicts arise because of unfulfilled desires and binds us to monotony; one starts "existing" instead of "living".
The second character we are introduced to is Shaukhat played by Irfan Khan, Shaukhat adds the much necessary humor to the movie. Though, the character appears to be a lively person, he too didn't have a perfect past.
The third character, Tanya was played by Mithila Palkar who is known for her work in various Web Series including Girl in the City and Little Things. Mithila made her debut with Karwaan and surprisingly, her acting was not at all overshadowed by Irfan Khan and Dulquer Salman who have mastered their art. Mithila's character added chirpiness to the movie and through her character, the issue of "generation gap" was "subtly" highlighted.
But again, life is all about finding happiness in the imperfections of life. This concept is closely linked to the Japanese art of Wabi-Sabi.
