THE LAYERS OF Anurag Kashyap's DEV D and Netflix's Choked
Updated: Aug 25, 2020
Dev D by Anurag kashyap managed to be an off beat and an interesting movie and still had all the elements of a typical Bollywood movie. Its cinematography was unique, three stories , three different characters , three different backgrounds subsequently merged into a single story so beautifully that one was glued to the screen. Anurag Kashyap 's characters always tend to have various layers to them and the small details in his movie never fail to surprise me. Kalki's character was shown juggling whenever she felt overwhelmed is one such small detail. Inspired by the film devdas, Dev D is Kashyap's modern Devdas where the endings are not usual. The ending, however is not similar to the original version of the film. An alcoholic Dev finally comes to terms with the realities of life unlike the original film where Dev destroys himself to death.

The ending of Dev D is relevant to the modern times where one has no time to waste on sorrow, one has to move on and continue facing life. There isn't much time to waste on grief or celebration; one must not stop.
The film is dark , quirky and entertaining at the same time, it marked Kalki's debut in Bollywood and she gave a fabulous performance. Her character had loads of layers attached to it. From a reckless girl to a fearless independent woman , the character went through its own set of transformations during the course of the movie. Every time she sat in front of the mirror to get dressed, they gave her a different look. It probably represented different layers of her character. I would like to quote a YouTube comment which I like a lot "Kalki is like egg yolk. Over time you start liking it and then you crave for it." I have watched every movie / short film starring Kalki and I couldn't relate more.
And how can one forget the iconic "Emotional atyachaar" song starring Sunil Grover and Nawazuddin Siddiqui while talking about Dev D. The song caught the public eye and became very popular.
" हम एक बार जीते हैं, एक बार मरते है,...." before you complete it pyaar do baar ho sakta hai. Period. That's what Dev D taught us. Change the rules now.
The makers of Dev D came up with a brand new Netflix original called "CHOKED- paisa bolta hai" and it trending on Netflix right now.
